Building Racial Justice in Baltimore 32-hour Workshop Series

What can white people do about systemic racism?

Participants will explore the historical development as well as the contemporary implications of racism in the United States, how structural racism affects activism, and how to effectively use power and privilege in promoting equity and will work with learning partners to develop an antiracist action plan to help them deepen their own understanding and to build racial equity within their own circles of influence. Participation will require a commitment of 32 hours of classroom time, plus 2-3 hours between sessions for reading and meeting with a learning partner.

This eight-week workshop, facilitated by trained and experienced BRJA members, is for peoples of color who want to learn more about the impacts of racism and how to mitigate them; and develop or deepen personal analysis of structural racism in the United States for the purpose of working for racial justice.

What can white people do about systemic racism? This seven-week workshop is designed for white people who want to be more effective working for racial justice. Participants will explore the historical development as well as the contemporary implications of racism in the United States, how structural racism affects community organizing and activism, and how to effectively use power and privilege in promoting equity and mitigating the forces of racism.

With the perspectives of everyday speakers and the guidance of historians, linguists, and educators, “Talking Black in America” showcases the history and symbolic role of language in the lives of African Americans, highlighting its tremendous impact on the speech and culture of the United States. The documentary addresses the persistent misinformation about African American speech and situates it as an integral part of the historical and cultural legacy of all Americans.
