This three-day workshop series is for people of color employed as DEI workers within organizations, companies, or institutions (i.e. responsible for carrying out organization's DEI plan and/or equitable hiring practices). BRJA trainers of color will facilitate the series, bringing with them years of experience providing racial equity workshops for groups of color and mixed race groups including white people, primarily within the nonprofit field. Participants will develop or deepen their analysis of structural racism in the U.S. for the purpose of advancing racial justice, particularly as DEI workers of color. Additionally, they will leave the workshop series with an action plan for promoting strategies to mitigate inequitable racial barriers that arise within their respective organizations.

It's Winter 1978.

Linda, a 15- year-old Black girl, who lives in the projects and secretly writes poetry, sets off to find Bob Marley.Finding him, she believes, will enable her to find herself. As her journey takes unexpected turns, it pulls out powerful threads of racial history that shaped the lives of Linda and her family.

Please join BRJA, The Lyric, and guests for a special reading and discussion of "Waiting in Vain," a 1993 play by the late Rebecca Rice. Rice was an actress, writer and teacher with Center Stage and D.C.'s Arena Stage. The discussion will focus on ways to continue Rice's mission of using theater to promote social change.

This workshop series is BRJA’s introductory class for white people, with an emphasis on education. Participants will all be educators.

Participants will explore the historical development as well as the contemporary implications of racism in the United States, how structural racism affects educational systems, the unique challenges for white educators working in a predominantly African American city and how to effectively strategize for promoting educational equity. Participants will work with learning partners to develop an anti-racist action plan to help them deepen their own understanding and to possibly also advocate for racial equity within their own circles of influence. This can include bringing a racial equity lens to their curricula and teaching. Participation will require a commitment of 32 hours of classroom time, plus 2-4 hours between sessions for reading and meeting with a learning partner.
