13th of the Month Event Series

Women’s History Month began as a week-long celebration of “women” in 1981 before expanding, in 1987, to a month. In then-President Jimmy Carter’s 1980 message designating March 2-8 as National Women’s History Week, he firmly grounded the week in America’s white settler origins, stating “From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. . .” Not All Women were included then, and — despite efforts to overlay more of a variety of cultural narratives over the established ones — Not All Women are included now.

Join us as we disrupt the historical settler origins that resulted in the narratives of “Not ALL Women” being heard or celebrated, and as we reframe the established narrative of what has been (White) Women’s History Month.
