Black Respectability Politics: A tool to try and prove Black people’s humanity in opposition to the stereotypes stemming from the justification of enslavement and social subjugation.
As a survival tactic, Black people often police each other for the white gaze. While it is a tool rooted in anti-blackness, it is also homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, and patriarchal. What historical events have allowed for Black respectability politics to endure and overtime? How does Black respectability politics deem some Blace lives disposable and others Black lives worth fighting for? What role do white people and non-Black POC have in recognizing these politics at play and what resistance action is necessary?
Join us as we examine the ways Black respectability politics are connected to policies, cultural norms, and systemic moving of white supremacy and anti-Blackness.
