“An unarmed people are slaves or are subject to slavery at any given moment." -Huey P. Newton, In Defense of Self-Defense (1967)

The relationship between America and guns has a long and complex history. From hunting to self-defense, they often symbolize independence, freedom, and patriotism. However, white people have long been at the center of this discussion. This past February, BRJA held a discussion on Black Gun Ownership and explored some of the complicated yet importantreasons why Black gun ownership is on the rise. However, that conversation just scratched the surface.

This month, we want to examine the historicalrelationship between firearms and Black Rebellion. How this deep history informsthe relationship that Black people have with firearmstoday, especially since there has been an increase in firearm purchases amongst Black people. Also, how do Black women fit into this conversation?

Join BRJA as we expand our discussion on Black gun ownership and its history in ourrebellion, resistance, and survival!
